Who we are
The critical care midwifery team is a team of 11 midwives who have undertaken a university module in critical care and have attained competency based clinical assessments.
They work closely with a dedicated critical care obstetric consultant, anaesthetists and the Intensive care team.
Established in 1999, the team was one of the first if its kind in the UK.
What we do
Our aim is to ensure the best possible outcomes for women and babies when mothers are ill during pregnancy, delivery and post-natally through evidence-based practice, and provide compassionate and consistent team oriented care.
The wishes of women and families will always be taken into consideration.
Why do women get critically ill?
In most cases pregnancy and childbirth goes well for women. In some cases it doesn’t. A small but growing minority have the potential to become critically ill.
Some women develop very high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, severe infection (sepsis), massive post-partum haemorrhage, clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism).
Additionally some women may have pre-existing heart, kidney, respiratory diseases or other conditions.
