Our services
The main radiology departments are in The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Friarage Hospital, Northallerton where we have the majority of our services. These sites provide expert imaging 24 hours a day – seven days a week.
General radiography (x-ray) is also provided at the community hospitals in Redcar, Guisborough, East Cleveland (Brotton), One Life in Middlesbrough and the Friary Hospital Richmond. Ultrasound services are provided at One Life, Guisborough and Redcar as well as our main sites.
Our staff
Consultant radiologists are specially trained doctors who report on imaging and undertake specialist procedures such as biopsies and angioplasties for example.
Advanced practitioners are radiographers, nurses or sonographers who have undertaken specialist training to perform and/or report examinations which would have been traditionally undertaken by a consultant radiologist. This includes specialists in general radiography, CT, MRI, breast imaging, ultrasound scanning and Interventional radiology and fluoroscopy.
Radiographers are allied health professionals trained to undertake medical imaging such as CT scans and X-rays.
Sonographers are practitioners who specialise in ultrasound scanning. They are able to both perform and report scans.
Radiology nurses are trained to look after patients before, during and after complex Interventional Procedures. Our nurses pre assess patients to assess their suitability to attend as day cases and ensure their safety during the journey through radiology.
Radiology support workers are staff members who can assist in the day to day running of the department and look after patients while they are with us. Such as assistant practitioners, porters, radiology assistants and health care assistants.
Admin and clerical staff are involved in appointing patients, administration of systems, storage of imaging and secretarial duties.
