Salicylate (Aspirin)

Background

Salicylates are probably the most widely used anti-inflammatory drugs and high levels are sometimes used to control many of the features of rheumatoid arthritis. It follows that it some cases it is necessary to monitor the serum levels. Because the drug is so easily available, it is also one of the most common forms of overdose. Consequently when suspected overdose cases are admitted, salicylate levels are usually asked for. This is usually done at 4 hours post ingestion (when known), and the serum levels can be used to decide the treatment regime employed.

Therapeutic range: < 300mg/L

Sample type:

• Serum and lithium heparinised plasma.
• Samples should be taken into plain, white top universal containers. Boric acid urine collections are unsuitable.
