Children’s and Young People’s Surgical Day Unit
This information leaflet provides you with advice and guidance once your child is safe to be discharged home following nasal cautery.
Managing pain
Your child may experience some discomfort for the first few days, please give pain relief such as paracetamol as required. Please follow instructions on the bottles and do not give more than stated doses.
How can I help my child?
- It is very important your child avoids nose blowing or nose picking for two weeks following the procedure but it is okay to sniff.
- Encourage your child to open their mouth if they think they are going to sneeze.
- It is best your child stays away from anyone with a cold or infection.
Wound care
An antibiotic ointment may be prescribed for your child, if so, please begin to use it the morning after surgery as prescribed. You may notice your child has some blood-stained discharge from their nose for the first few days, this is normal.
Important
Please be aware some ointments can contain peanut oil and should not be used if there is an allergy to peanut or soya. If you notice any of the following side effects your child may have an allergy to the ointment. Tell your doctor or contact your nearest hospital straight away.
- Swelling of the face, tongue or throat
- Difficulty breathing
- Dizziness
- Severe irritation, reddening or blistering of your skin.
School, nursery and activities
- Your child can attend school 2 days after surgery.
- Contact sports MUST be avoided for 2 weeks.
Follow up
Your child’s consultant will decide if you require a follow up appointment if so, this will be sent in the post.
