The foundation training programme (FP) is a two-year generic training programme which bridges the gap between medical school and specialty/general practice training.
FP is UK wide with a national FP curriculum with specific competences and outcomes to achieve and evidence in an ePortfolio.
FP training is overseen by the UK Foundation Programme Office whose website is a useful resource, including for all national FP documentation.
We deliver high quality teaching to approximately 60 Foundation year one (FY1) and year two (FY2) doctors in training each year and also have a number of standalone FY2 posts.
Foundation doctors have protected time to attend a full days generic skills training each month as part of their foundation curriculum.
All of our training is delivered by highly skilled and experienced professionals.
We have excellent training facilities with a newly built immersive simulation suite.
Time is protected for attendance to immersive and VR simulations to practice medical skills.
At South Tees we have dedicated faculty to support foundation doctors including a foundation tutor, two associate tutors, two clinical lecturers and administrator.
Our faculty aim to provide excellent pastoral care, support and e-portfolio guidance.
We hold regular forums, a buddy system and one to one supervision which has received exceptional feedback through the Foundation School Your School Your Say survey.
When starting, all foundation doctors will receive a detailed induction, shadowing period and will be allocated an experienced clinical and educational supervisor.
Foundation year one
Foundation year one (F1) enables medical graduates to consolidate the skills they have learned at medical school and begin to take supervised responsibility for patient care.
Satisfactory completion of F1 enables full registration with the GMC.
Foundation year two
Foundation year two (F2) doctors remain under clinical supervision while making progress towards independent practice.
Satisfactory completion of F2 will lead to the award of a Foundation Programme Certificate of Completion (FPCC) which enables the foundation doctor to progress to a core, specialty or general practice training programme.
Rotations
Our four-month rotations give opportunities to cover acute and community placements across James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.
GP rotations are based across the county with mental health placements based in Tees Esk Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV).
During the application process students will only pick their first three rotations.
If applying for South Tees students have the opportunity to select their FY2 rotations based on their preferences and career aspirations.
They will be selected at the beginning of the FY1 placement where a more informed decision can be made.
We have academic posts at South Tees and there is opportunity to apply for an education post during FY2, please be advised places are limited.
Taster sessions can be arranged in different specialties within the trust and also outside of the trust to allow for more exposure.
