Gynaecology
This information is to provide aftercare and advice to women who have had a hysteroscopy within our gynaecology department. This advice will be discussed with you following your treatment and should only be used following discussion with the clinician carrying out your procedure.
Following hysteroscopy
You may feel that you need to go home to rest, or you may return to work and, or normal activities if you wish.
Most women experience no problems following a hysteroscopy. But if you do develop any of the following symptoms within the next 7 to 10 days, they may be a sign of an infection or other complication. Please contact the hospital immediately:
- Prolonged heavy bleeding
- Pain that persists for more than 48 hours despite taking pain relief
- Severe pain
- Swollen tummy
- Raised temperature
- Vaginal discharge that smells unpleasant.
You may have light bleeding or spotting for a few days following the procedure, this is normal.
It is best to avoid intercourse until after the bleeding has stopped. Sexual intercourse may be resumed as soon as you feel ready and once you have stopped bleeding.
If you experience any ‘period- like’ pain, you can take pain relief if necessary for example ibuprofen or paracetamol.
