Medical Photography and Video Service
The medical photography department provide a medical photography, video service and support service across the Trust.
We employ medical photographers to take your photographs, or video, for your medical records to monitor your condition and treatment. The photographs, or video, can also be used as part of the planning process alongside other tests such as x-rays, scans and blood tests. Our medical photographers are fully qualified and registered with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS).
Consent
When you have photographs or video taken within the hospital you have the choice of how they are used. This is documented on a special consent form that you will be asked to sign by your healthcare professional.
The consent form has three options that you may sign:
- Medical records: to assist with your care and treatment.
- Teaching and research: to train other healthcare professionals.
- Patient to patient: to show to other patients at this hospital who may be having the same treatment as you.
You have the right to change your mind about the permission you have agreed to at any time by calling our department on 01642 850850 Ext: 53077.
Publication: your photographs or video could be of such interest that a healthcare professional may wish to publish them in a medical journal or textbook. Before they can be used in this way, you will be contacted and asked to sign a separate consent form if you agree to this. Most of these publications are available online and you should be aware that your photographs or video may appear there as well.
Medical photography session
If you are sent to the medical photography department you will be photographed or filmed in our fully equipped photographic studio at James Cook University Hospital. Our photographers aim to reassure you throughout the process and always respect your privacy and dignity.
If you need to undress for your photographs, or video, we will offer you a chaperone that can stay with you during the session to make you more comfortable.
Please note – Medical photography involves the use of flashing lights so if you suffer from any medical condition that might be affected by this, please let your photographer know.
Image storage
All photographs and video recordings are stored on our secure electronic database to make sure they are safe and secure. This database can only be accessed by the relevant healthcare professionals in the trust.
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust owns the copyright to all clinical photographs and video. In line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR 2018), you can request copies of your medical photographs or video by contacting Patient Subject Access: 01642 854460.
