What made you decide to pursue a career in radiotherapy?
I knew I wanted to work in oncology and, after seeing how the radiotherapy department works, I decided to apply for the apprenticeship. I liked the idea of learning on the job and the relationships built between the patients and staff.
What does a typical day at placement look like for you?
Working on the linear accelerators (linacs) with the staff, where patients receive their treatment. This involves setting up patients and ensuring they have the information needed on their first/last day, if they need medication or a review etc. I also assist with patients if they need transporting from the ward, collect and input prescriptions to pharmacy and complete admin jobs where needed (collecting/returning notes, phone calls).
What do you enjoy most about your course / placement?
I enjoy the rapport that is built between us and our patients, making sure they feel comfortable to tell us how they are doing, and also the variety of tasks that each day brings.
What are some of the challenges to the course / placement?
It can be difficult juggling a degree and also learning a new role at the same time, this got easier after the first year. It can be a challenge managing what tasks take priority (university assignments verses work-based learning) but there is always support available.
