What we do
The children and young people’s pre assessment service is here to:
Make sure you are fit for surgery
Help decide when your surgery should be done
Help decide if anything special is needed in advance
Help prepare you and your family for your theatre journey
Once the surgeon has decided on the date of your operation, they will refer you to our pre assessment service.
We will ask questions about your health and inform you and your family of what to expect on the day of surgery.
Generally you will be seen four to six weeks before surgery so we have time to make sure everything is in place.
All children and young people have an appointment with a pre assessment nurse before their operation. If this is not done then the operation date may be cancelled.
This appointment may be over the telephone or face to face. During the appointment we will ask about medical conditions, other professionals involved with you or your family and make sure that everything is in place so that your surgery can go ahead safely.
We also offer consultant pre assessments (in addition to the nursing assessment) for children and young people with more complex needs or those with significant anxiety.
Where to find us
The pre assessment clinic can be found on ward 22 at The James Cook University Hospital.
