Neonatal transport
The James Cook University Hospital team also do neonatal transfers together with the team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, which includes newborn infant transfers as well as paediatric ones. This can be from anywhere across the northern region.
Research in the department
The department has an active research ethos and has been involved in several local research initiatives as well as being part of many international studies involving lots of centres. It is essential research studies are carried out to discover the most effective treatments available, so we can provide the very best medical and nursing care for early, small or sick babies.
A nurse or doctor may talk with parents about studies currently in progress and written parental consent is always be required before taking part in any research study.
Annual neonatal conference
Professor Sunil Sinha, one of our neonatal consultants, leads an annual international neonatal conference which attracts speakers and delegates from all over the world.
Northern neonatal network
Both of our units in the department of neonatal medicine are part of the Northern Neonatal Network together with the other ten units across the local area. Being part of this network allows us to share good practice and also monitor our standards of care.
We also have a parents’ sub-group and two parents sit on the Northern Neonatal Network Board. Further details of the network can be found at the northern neonatal network.
