It includes Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis which affects at least 300,000 people in the UK – about one person in 20.
The IBD clinical nurse specialist (CNS) team offer the following clinical services:
- Telephone advice line
- Nurse-led clinics
- Immunosuppressant blood monitoring service
- Inpatient care
- Information on:
- Disease and treatment options
- Drug treatments
- Surgical options
- Pregnancy
- Advice during a flare-up of your disease
- Diet and lifestyle advice
Our nursing team comprises of two full time IBD specialist nurses Linda Jolly and Faye Caley and one full time nurse for biologics covering The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.
At James Cook at least one nurse will be available Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) 9am till 5pm. We hold two nurse led clinics, Monday morning and Thursday afternoon for the purposes of counselling for new treatments, newly diagnosed, relapses, recently discharged and review patients.
Currently at the Friarage at least one nurse will be available Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am till 5pm. We hold one nurse led clinic on Thursday afternoon as above.
IBD nurse telephone advice line
Both sites have an IBD nurse telephone advice line with an answering machine service to provide direct access to one of our nurses for advice, triage, initiate treatment if required and requesting appropriate investigations. We aim to return calls within the next working day. Please note this is not an emergency service.
