South Tees hypertension service (STHS)
High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition that can cause heart attacks, strokes, kidney or heart failure.
NHS guidance recognises that some patients do not respond to usual treatments from their GP. They should be able to meet a specialist for further investigation and treatment.
South Tees Hospitals has a service for hypertension patients to meet this need.
The South Tees Hypertension Service (STHS) is a team of doctors from many specialties including heart, kidney and hormone.
We have access to a wide range of complex tests. These range from simple blood and urine tests to specialised tests such as CT scanning, ultrasound and MRI scans.
The team may be able to offer complex and new treatments for hypertension to suitable patients, such as renal artery stenting.
We try to find and treat the underlying causes of some high blood pressure, such as:
- Hyperaldosteronism
- Kidney disease
- Weight loss surgery
- Sleep disorders
- Haeochromocytoma or rarer endocrine problems
Patients referred by their GP because of high blood pressure will see one of the STHS team, who are experienced and qualified to offer the best current treatment.
