The James Cook University Hospital is the major trauma centre (MTC) for the South Durham, East Cleveland, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire areas.
MTCs are specialist hospitals that are able to deal with injuries to all parts of the body and here at James Cook we receive both adults and children with significant injuries.
The hospital forms the hub of the regional major trauma network. Our network is made up of smaller trauma units such as North Tees and Darlington hospitals which pass on badly injured patients up to us.
At James Cook we provide specialist services and rehabilitation for injured adults and children, all in one place including:
- Emergency medicine
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopaedics
- Vascular surgery
- Cardiothoracic
- Spinal injuries
- Plastic surgery
- Maxillofacial surgery
An important part of recovering from serious injury is rehabilitation. As well as a team of specialist trauma doctors and nurses, here at James Cook we also have an experienced physiotherapy and occupational therapy team.
These specialist therapists help our injured patients recover after surgery and also coordinate return to home or transfer to a hospital closer and more convenient to the patient’s friends and family.
