The clinical measurement team use their scientific and engineering knowledge to perform quality assurance (QA). QA is a way of checking that the equipment being used for patient care is functioning as it should be. If not, the clinical scientists can recalibrate some equipment so that it is working properly.
Phototherapy ultraviolet testing
Our clinical scientists oversee the safety testing of the phototherapy cabins and units based in dermatology. This involves using special equipment to measure the amount of Ultraviolet radiation being emitted from the phototherapy units. The main reason we perform this testing is to ensure that the equipment is delivering the dose that has been prescribed for phototherapy treatment.
Urodynamics equipment testing
Our clinical scientists oversee the functional testing of urodynamics equipment that is used to measure urine flow in gynaecology and radiology.
Laser safety
We have a specially trained clinical scientist who acts as the laser protection adviser for the trust. This means they help to ensure that all medical lasers are used safely in all the hospitals in the trust, and provide advice on their safe use for staff.
