Apolipoprotein AI is used in the evaluation of risk for atherosclerotic disease and the detection of Tangier disease.
Background
Apolipoprotein AI (Apo AI) is one of the apoproteins of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Mutations encoding APOA1 are associated with HDL deficiencies and can confer a higher risk of coronary heart disease. Individuals with Tangier disease have <1% the normal amount of HDL and thus Apo AI.
