The acute medical unit (AMU) is the first point of entry for patients referred to hospital as emergencies by their GP and those requiring admission from the emergency department.
Patients will be initially assessed by a nurse who will record vital signs such as temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
Other diagnostics such as blood tests and x-rays may also be required.
Patients who are thought to be discharged within two to three days may stay on the AMU under the care of an acute physician.
The AMU at The James Cook University Hospital is based on Ward 37.
